Scrap extraction is performed with the Extractor tool aimed at a deposit, typically rust scrap from old machinery on the floating islands of Tycos, with the tool consuming 1 Power Unit per second while running.

How to use the Extractor

The Extractor is equipped from the backpack (default key T) and aimed at the deposit you want to mine. It consumes 1 Power Unit per second, and a small battery stores 100 power units, so one fully charged small battery supports about 100 seconds of continuous extraction before the tool needs a fresh battery.

Getting scrap back to a base

Once full, the scrap is moved through the same loading loop used for other heavy resources: smaller loads go straight into the Wasp's inventory or the player's backpack, while bulky loads are airlifted by the Cargo Wasp using its magnetic hoist. From there the cargo is either offloaded at the Cruiser via the cargo lift that opens automatically when the Cargo Wasp approaches, or sent on to a Material Processor module to be converted into usable parts.

Running the loop between islands

The Utility Wasp's mobile camp can host a Material Processor and a small hydrogen refinery, which means the whole extraction-and-processing loop can run between islands without returning to the Cruiser — useful when chasing a fresh ruin or salvaging a PACE site.

Keeping the extractor powered

Sustained extraction runs come down to managing the battery budget: keep a charged spare battery in the backpack so the Extractor does not stop mid-deposit, and avoid running the Extractor and a power-hungry camp tool at the same time unless the camp hub has the surplus to cover it.
